In honor of the Tlingit people and the land we occupy. Their culture, their art, and their way of life permeates the Pacific Northwest. Many of these references was during colonization, and the development of the area to western ways of life.
Known as Chilkat weaving, derived from the Tlinkit people who reside near the Chilkat region - these references are pulled from the book “Northwest Coast Indian Designs” by Madeleine Orban-Szontagh.
Chilkat weaving is unique, as an artist can create curvilinear and circular forms within the weave itself and usually applied to a traditional robe with symbols and images that represent the clan and their oral history.
Named after Chief Seattle of the Suquamish and Duwamish people, it was during the late 1700s that European settlers came to the area. The founding of the city came later in the 1850s, developed by farmers, fishermen, loggers, and timber mills. These references show the change and influence of Eurocentric ideals that shift the narrative of the region.
